As part of its 40th Anniversary Celebration last year, the Portland Marathon announced the new 10K Downhill Dash, a competitive run (not a walk) for those who can go the 10K distance in 60 minutes or less.
Scheduled for the morning of the Portland Marathon, the 10K Downhill Dash is limited to a field of just 250 runners.
The Dash will be a chip-timed event that starts at 8:00 am on North Willamette Blvd. at Columbia Park Annex. The start is actually by the 20 mile mark of the Portland Marathon, and is also shared by the 25th Portland Marathon 10K Family Walk. This year the 10K Walkers may begin anytime after the 10K Downhill Dash runners have cleared the start.
The 10K Family Walk has been and will continue to be an event with a course that stays on the sidewalks or on the right side of the Marathon Course thru to the finish. The 10K Walkers are really a moving band of spectators who cheer on the Marathoners as they come running by. This year the 10K Walkers will also have the opportunity to cheer runners on at the start of the Downhill Dash.
The Downhill Dash will be a fast course that traces the final six miles of the full Marathon route. Because of the 60 minutes or less time requirement, the last Downhill Dash runner should be across the line well ahead of the first Marathon Finisher.
10K Downhill Dash participants will receive a performance grade finisher shirt, a medal, a commemorative bib, the Marathon commemorative poster, a space blanket, a rose and a tree seedling. After crossing the finish, Dash Runners will proceed through the regular Marathon finish area where they may replenish from the wide array of food and beverages offered.
Registration will be available exclusively online at www.portlandmarathon.org, and opens in August. As soon as the 250 slots are sold, online registration will close for this event - there will be no entry at the Expo. The Marathon's rules for no refunds, no rollovers and no transfers of any kind will also apply. Packet Pickup will be at the Portland Marathon Expo. NOTE: THERE IS NO PACKET PICKUP ON THE MORNING OF THE EVENT!
Porta Potties will be provided at the start area by Columbia Annex Park. Limited parking is available in the area of the start along local streets. It is recommended instead, that participants park downtown near the finish, and then ride the special buses to the start departing between 6:30 and 7:00 am from SW Salmon between SW Broadway and SW Park (beside the Heathman Hotel and the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall). For those who prefer to park near the start, buses will also run after the event from the same location to return finishers to the start to retrieve their vehicles. Note: Your 10K Downhill Dash participant bib will serve as your bus ticket for transport either to, or returning to the start.
Any clothing checked at the start may be retrieved at the regular Marathon and Half Marathon clothing pickup in the Finish Area. (For the exact location see the final instructions provided at the Expo during packet pickup.)
Awards for the top 10 overall Open Men and Women and a separate top 10 for Masters over 40 will be given at the Awards Ceremony at the Portland Hilton Ballroom starting at 11:00 am.
